The injuries done to a child resulting from aggression , may becaused of beating,slapping ,kicking ,pinching ,hair pulling ,burning with cigarettes or any severe physical punishment.Even if the injury is not intended the act remains to be considered physical abuse.
Some may ask is physical punishment treated like child physical abuse?
Physical abuse is an injury caused from physical aggression. Whilst physical punishment is the use of physical force with the intention of inflicting bodly pain without injuries in the form of wounds for the purpose of correction or control to intill a sense of discipline.
However the physical punishment can easily get out of control and become physical abuse.
Signs and Behavioural indicators of Physically Abused Children:Burns ,cuts,bruises on some body parts.Some children resist to go home or to school where the abuse frequently takes place.
Some children also fear adults or any person who has aggression attitudes.
Emotional Child Abuse according to Cohen (1992)the is child abused as belittling ,humiliating ,rejecting or undermining a child 's self esteem and generally not creating a positive atmosphere for a child because of the authority like parents guardians ,teachers or other persons. In other words it is hating of child's emotions resulting in the total distruction of a child's esteem.
Emotional child abuse is any attitude ,behaviour ,failure or act that interferes with any child's mental health or social development .It can range from simple verbal insult to an extreme form of punishment.Emotional abuse is almost present when another form of abuse is found and has long lasting ,negative mental effects that are either physical or sexual abuse.
The examples of emotional abuse in children are intimidation which includes threatening ,frightening or bullying.
Belitling or shaming as humiliating the child or name calling.
Lack of affection and love ,the child do not have noone to give physical affection such as hugs and words of praise like,!"I love you."
Ignoring children ,just by withdrawing attention or giving cold shoulders.Extreme punishment ,by tying a child to a chair for long period of time,or command a child to learn whilst standing whilst others setting as form of punishment.
Child abduction ,the mental suffering of being kidnapped including kidnapping by an abductor.
Signs and Behavioural indicators of emotionally abused Children.
They usually suffer from depression, and at times some are hostile or aggressive.These children has difficulties in concentrating.
Child Neglect is a very common type of child abuse ,more and more children suffer from neglect than from physical and sexual abuse combined. Why?Because it is very difficult to tell.
The teacher can also oftenly neglect children.However the victims are not easily identified because neglection is an act of commission that is to say ,of not doing something.
Neglecting is failing to provide basic needs of children .A single neglection might not be considered child abuse ,but repeated neglect is definitely a serious child abuse.
The major forms of child neglect are:
physical
educational
emotional
Physical Neglect:The failure to provide food ,clothing appropriate for weather conditions at home and hygienic,safety and medical care which is compulsorily needed by a child in life.
Educational Neglect :Every child at the school going age need to be enrolled in school or to be provided with any special formal education which allow him/her to learn any selections from culture without allowing accessive absence from such institutions set up and ensure the child has all needed to attend education ranging from school uniform and all educational stationery useful to make education a success.
Emotional Neglect :This is a total failure to give children their most needed love and affection which influence their growing and developmental wellbeing.
Signs and Behavioural Indicators of Neglected Children:
They are badly clothed ,wear torn clothes and are very dirty these children are always dirty.
They look hungry,shy and isolated.When they are alone their always lament and don't want to associated with other well being children.
General Negative Effects of Child Abuse
Physical Effects:Injuries,death or long life health problems, for example the HIV &AIDS pandemic in poor families ,children are also reported to be affected by HIV.
Emotional Effects:Low self esteem,depression and anxiety .The relationships are always difficulty with persistent fighting any any forms of domestic violence.
Behavioural effects:Problems at school and at home,teen pregnancy ,suicide attempts ,criminal or anti-social behaviour. Substance abuse as these children no longer need to live at home and now loitering along the streets.Some with very aggressive behaviour.
